2020-11-28 Turkey O at Hawn State Park

Mark Geldmeier is hosting a 3hr and 1hr Score – O format Orienteering meet at one of the most beautiful parks in the state! Come work off all that turkey and stuffing!

*** Due to increasing COVID-19 cases in Missouri, this year’s event will look a little different.  We hope these adjustments will make this a safe and fun event for everyone. ***

The course will be set up and available from Wednesday, November 25th through Saturday, December 5th.

Participants can choose to do the course on their own anytime during those dates, or join the group start at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 28.

Registration:  Please register online ahead of time.

Format:  A “score O” format lets participants choose their own route and get as many checkpoints as possible in the time allotted.  You can select either 1 hour or 3 hours.  There are 28 checkpoints. Five of the checkpoints are worth 3 points (noted on the clue sheet with an asterick). All other checkpoints are worth 1 point.  Get as many as you can, in any order.  But if you’re late, there’s a penalty of 1 point per minute.

Virtual Option:  If you do the event on your own, you can either pick up the map (with checkpoints pre-marked) at the meet director’s house in Kirkwood/Glendale at any time (they’ll be outside in a cooler).  Or, you can have a scanned digital version sent via email. The hard-copy is much nicer!  Email the meet director to insure a map is ready and waiting.  Once you get the map, you can go to Hawn at any time.  For safety, it’s recommended you inform someone of your plans.  It’s also suggested you email your plan and emergency contacts to the meet director.  Start at the main shelter and track your time.  Remember, you goal is to get as many as you can in either 1 hour or 3 hours.  When you’re done, send your time and a picture of the punch card to the meet director.

Group Start Option: Your map will be waiting for you at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 28 (please pre-register).  We’ll start at 11:00 am, but there will likely be multiple starts depending on the number of participants.

Additional details:

·       Please social distance at all times.

·       Hand sanitizer will be available.

·       Maps will be pre-marked and placed with punch card into map cases.

·       We’ll be using manual punches (not electronic).

·       Since the checkpoints are being placed ahead of time, it’s possible they could disappear.

·       No water and no food will be provided.  Please bring your own.

·       Results will not be announced at the finish.  We like you, but socializing is discouraged.
