Congratulations to Brian Rodenbeck our overall winner. Thanks to everyone who assisted in making this a success including Brian Hey, Zdneck, Bryan Niehaus, and Hannah and Amber at Wyman for the use of the Enterprise Building and access to the property. It was a miserable day of setting the course on Saturday but was just about perfect weather for Sunday’s meet (and Monday’s course clean up). See below for full results as well as the podium for each division. Please let me know if you see anything you have a question about.
It’s back for year two! This United States Adventure Racing Association (USARA) sanctioned adventure race will be once again located in Creve Coeur Park in St. Louis. Adventure Racing involves trekking, biking, and paddling, all while orienteering. In addition to navigational skills, this meet will challenge racers in their endurance, strategy, decision making, and teamwork abilities.
The race is fully contained in the park with the paddle section on the lake and the biking and trekking, well, you’ll find that out on race morning. The time limit is four hours and the course can be tailored to any skill set, making this a great one for newbies, families, and novices who want to give orienteering in new disciplines a try.
And of course, our competitive crew will have all they can handle for four hours.
We are offering a single course geared for all skill sets. The time limit is 4 hours. While all teams will receive the same information and be able to obtain any checkpoint they want to attempt, teams wanting to compete for the podium will have to obtain the additional “advanced” points which will require greater navigational skill, strategy, and plotting by UTM.
Team Options:
We have a 150 person limit
We are accepting solo, 2, 3 or 4 person teams
Three team division/gender categories: all-female, all-male, or mixed gender.
In addition, a single master’s division will be for teams where all members are age 55 or over. A single juniors division will be for team with all members under age 18. A single family division for mixed teams with participants both over and under 18.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What kind of bike should I bring?
A: Any non-motorized, non-electric bicycle is legal for the race. We encourage MTB’s. The course will include some technical trails that will be difficult for most riders to traverse on a hybrid or gravel bike. Do not bring a road bike.
Q: What if I’m missing a piece of gear before the race?
A: We have a big communicty of racers and we probably have something you can borrow. Just reach out and ask.
Q: How far/long will I bike/paddle/trek and what will the course consist of?
A: The course is designed to test navigation and strategy. Teams can shorten the course if they choose to not pursue all of the checkpoints. To clear the entire course, estimate 6 miles on trek, 15 miles on bike, 4 miles paddling. The course may require you to go in a certain order on a certain section but you will also be permitted to skip points at any time without penalty. There may be instances where you have completed a section and cannot go back and get any points on that section. You will not have the entire course at the start and will have to check in to the transition area to receive additional information during the race.
Q: Can I make changes to my registration?
A: You can add or substitute registration choices until midnight on August 15th when registration closes by contacting us at contourline@stlouisorienteering.org. Once the August 15th deadline has passed, no refunds will be offered. Only registrations by August 15th will receive swag.
Mandatory Gear:
Racers may take additional gear as they feel necessary, so long as it does not violate any rules. All mandatory gear items must be functional and racers are expected to know how to make them function. Gear checks may occur on the course including functional/fit tests.

Rules:
Rules may be added or changed at any time before the event, and communicated by race staff by email, at the pre-race meeting, or at the race start. Racers are responsible for knowing the rules and any changes.
The Race Director reserves the right to alter cutoff times, race start and finish times, or the course itself before and during the event based on conditions and/or flow of the racers along the course.
Competitive Ranking:
Competitive ranking, for the purpose of awards, is determined first by:
Finisher status, then by
Points (checkpoints punched less penalty points), and then by
Finishing time
Finisher status: The possible finish status designations are listed below, from highest to lowest/
Competitive Finish: All team members arrive at the finish line together without transportation assistance and without being disqualified. Only competitive finishers are eligible for rankings and awards, including the USARA series points.
Partial Team Finish: A subset of the original team arrives at the finish line together without transportation assistance and without being disqualified.
Did not finish (DNF): The team receives transportation assistance to arrive at the finish line, or at least one team member communicates with race HQ accounting for the safety of all team members and indicating that their team is not completing the race.
Disqualified (DQ): The team is declared disqualified by the Race Director. Disqualified teams receive no points.
Each team will receive one e-punch stick. You will use the e-punch to obtain checkpoints by “punching” the control with the e-punch stick. If a section requires obtaining the checkpoints in a certain order and the team punches in the wrong sequence they lose credit for the CP obtained out of order. If the team discovers they have punched out of order they may obtain the next correct checkpoint in sequence and then return and re-punch any following checkpoints in their proper sequence and will receive full credit with no penalty.
Credit is only issued for punches on the e-punch stick. If a team loses the e-punch stick, the team can request a new blank e-punch at HQ and continue on as is it was the start of the race (no credit for punches on a lost e-punch). Extra e-punch sticks may be available but are not guaranteed.
Each checkpoint is worth one point unless otherwise stated on the Clue Sheet.
There will be no penalty for a missed checkpoint.
Deadline penalties will be strictly enforced based on the time recorded by the punches of the “start” and “finish” contols.
Checkpoints must be approached using the mode designated on the Clue Sheet.
Checkpoints may be punched in any order unless otherwise stated on the Clue Sheet.
Penalties
Violation of any of the following rules may result in point reduction, time penalty, or disqualification at the discretion of the Race Director.
First penalty is at the first second over 4 hours. Each full additional minute is an additional penalty. Each penalty is -1 checkpoint.
Race Director may enforce time or checkpoint penalties at their discretion based on the severity of any infraction of the rules. Time penalties will be added to the final time. Time penalties do not cause further checkpoint penalties if the time penalty takes a team over the 4 hour limit.
Racers shall accept the direction and decisions of race staff, and bring any complaints to the race director no later than 12pm. Arguing with, cursing at, or challenging the authority of race staff and volunteers, or other unbecoming behavior will be penalized.
Members of each team must remain within 100 feet of each other at all times during the race.
All racers and spectators must follow a “Leave-No-Trace” ethic. No littering or defacing property.
Teams must avoid all off-limits areas as marked on the map or described in the Clue Sheet.
Private property is considered off limits.
Teams must travel under their own power during the race. Accepting transportation assistance of any kind from anyone constitutes withdrawal from competition (DNF).

Racers must approach checkpoints using the transportation mode specified.

Thanks to Eureka CrossFit and Brian and Tammy for helping to make this one a unique event. It’s always a great time to hang out afterwards are share stories among friends of the course and our adventures. Thanks to you all for coming out and sharing the course with me.
Thanks to all who came out for another day in the woods. The morning started with a cool start and clear skies. 8 hours later, temps were in the 50’s and everyone’s legs were toast. A huge thanks to Gary and Ellen Thompson for an amazing event.
A huge shoutout to the Lafayette ROTC for bringing a large crew and crushing all those hills!
Detailed, control by control results can be found in below.
Thanks to everyone who helped put on this meet. It was a huge team effort once again to get so many racers through the event successfully. 46 people toed the line as individuals or groups to take on one of the four courses offered. Of course, there was also the GROM award which was given to the racer who bested both the blue course and then went out for a 90 minute score o with 33 CP options. Congrats to The Ukranian for taking this year’s rock.
The inaugural West Tyson Poker-O was a hit! Hit me again everyone said…..so we might do just that…….next year, that is. We didn’t know we had a club full of gamblers! They braved freezing temps, ice, and sliding rocks just to get in a card game. We thankful that all made it back safely except for this poor fella:
Here are the results of the O -Game. Bryan Niehaus nearly swept the whole event but card shark, Jeff Adams, swooped in and slammed down a Full House! Congrats to everyone who had the free time to enjoy in the experience. We hope to do more of these spontaneous, fun O-adventures for our valued members. If you have any ideas or would like to direct an event, just let us know!
Thanks to the Sona’s for a super fun Score O course. Congrats to Bryan for a first overall finish, Cynthia and Steven Truemper for first in the group catagory and Melissa and Myles Kelley for first in the group w/kids catagory. A huge thanks to Scott Kelley for getting the new techincal rig going for the club. It worked like a chime, an e-punch downloading chime that it.
What a great day to be on the lake. It started with a pretty wild overnight thunderstorm but that seemed to cool the air and calm the lake. So after my car broke down in the driveway, and I had to have some club members and parents (thanks Mom, Dad, and Bryan) come to the rescue, the course was finally up, the HQ was set and we were ready to roll about 9:30am. Thanks to Bryan, Mark, Scott, Kevin, and David who all came out early to help with set up and logistics. Thanks to Scott, Kevin, Robert, Mark, David, Bryan, and Joe for helping with breakdown and course pick up.
We had several divisions this time around with winners everywhere. The course was designed to be just a little too long to complete, forcing you to decide which controls you would go for and what you had to punt. There were two controls you could get to by foot if you chose (no one did) and five controls of higher point values to tempt you to paddle farther and make tough choices. Each minute over 60, starting with 60:01 was a penalty point so the penalty was steep, and did make a difference in the end.
It was great to be out there with everyone. Thanks for coming and playing in the water.
The map you first used last year at this meet has been fully completed. The Southeastern portion of Greensfelder, about 33% of the park and now including the Wyman Center, is complete and it’s a gem! This meet will take you around the section in great detail over four courses. HQ is at the Wyman Center, Enterprise Shelter.
Start with your annual SLOC membership, which is the best deal in St. Louis activities that you can find anywhere. We put on at least one meet per month with courses for every level of skill, every time. Use our on-line system FIRST, to purchase your membership and receive a coupon code instantly by email to then, SECOND, register for meets at a discount for the rest of the year. We have single, family, and special group memberships. The meet is $5 for members and $20 for non-members in advance. Those go up to $10 and $25 inside of two days prior to the meet.
WHITE: This course will be about 1.8km in length with 11 controls and climb of about 25m. The course is built to allow a youth to go out on their own with the map and feel confident. A special 1:5000 map will be provided. All controls will be along well-established paths and trails and will keep the orienteerer close to the Wyman property at all times.
ORANGE: I’ve noticed our usual orange course group has been getting good so I’m kicking this up a little on the navigation level. The length will be 3.4km with 11 controls and about 150m of climb. You will use handrails throughout and have bigger features to catch and will generally stay within the basin of Wyman.
GREEN: The green course folks will get a shot at some longer legs, more climb, and a number of route choices. This is essentially the group that is not going for the GROM (more on that to come) but still want that full course feel. This course is 4.8k in length with 12 controls and 250m of climb. You’ll be in the woods, don’t expect trails as handrails, expect to have to use all your skills.
BLUE: The blue course is designed to be course 1 of the GROM, but you are welcome to just do the blue course and be ranked on this course and not do course 2 of the GROM. The blue course is 7.3k in length with 14 controls and 400m of climb. This is a big course by design, thus the blue designation. There will be three big climbs on this course and of course many smaller ones based on your route choices. There will be long legs with route choice options. I am excited to see what our orienteerers come up on this course.
GREEN ROCK ORIENTEERING MASTER (GROM): This is the return of the GROM. You may recall this from last year. The format is two courses; part 1 is the blue course that must be run first (as described above). Then for part 2, you check back in, find out where you stand, and get the score O map. The score O allows you to obtain any control on the map in any order. The new addition for this year is that the controls are worth different points values to increase strategy. You will have 90 minutes to obtain as many as you can. You may take as long as you like to plan your route before heading out. Everyone will be chasing the person who finished first in points on the blue course. It will be amazing!
Scoring from the GROM will be based on a weighted system combining the two scores from the blue course and the score O course. The weighting goal is to allow for balance between two different styles of course. The winner of the GROM will be the highest point total in the combined scoring system. All those who complete the blue course will also be ranked in the blue results as well.
If you are participating in the GROM, please indicate it when you arrive for the day. I am working on a unique prize for this year just like last year.
UPDATED 8/12/23 AT 6AM – QUITE THE STORM BUT IT SEEMS TO BE PASSING. WE ARE ON FOR TODAY UNLESS THE WEATHER DOES SOMETHING UNEXPECTED IN THE NEXT THREE HOURS. SEE YOU THERE!
It’s been many years since SLOC held an orienteering meet on the water and the wait is over. Join us on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Creve Coeur Lake Park. Registration and starts begin at 9am, last starts occur at 12pm. Course closes at 1pm(UPDATED TIME – LARGER WINDOW OFFERED)
How does it work?
Paddle orienteering works just like a regular orienteering meet except you use a water craft of your choice to navigate your way around the course. Any non-motorized watercraft is permitted, including canoe, kayak, pack raft, stand up paddleboard, or whatever else you have in your personal livery.
Strategy
This meet will be a Score O format so you will receive your map at registration, plot your course, get your boat all ready to go, and set out. You will only have 60 minutes to obtain as many controls as you can. A one-point penalty will first commence at 60:00:01 and another for each additional minute. Don’t be late!
Watch your clue sheet closely as some of the farther controls are worth more points. The Score O format allows paddlers and navigators of all levels to enjoy the course at their pace. A non-competitive category will also be available. There is no time limit in the non-competitive category other than the course closing at 1pm.
Don’t have a boat – no problem.
Boats are not provided by SLOC but are available for rent at the Creve Coeur Lake Park boat rental kiosk. The race HQ/registration will be set up right next to the kiosk and they are expecting us and holding boats.
PLEASE PRE-REGISTER SO WE CAN TELL THE BOAT RENTAL COMPANY HOW MANY TO EXPECT! Those who pre-register are guaranteed a rental boat. Those who do not are first come, first serve along with the rest of those who are on the lake.
After you register and get your map, walk a few steps over to the kiosk and rent your boat. Start the meet when you have your boat and route ready.
Here is a link to the rentals, they rent canoes ($20), kayaks ($15), tandem kayaks ($20), and stand up paddle boards (SUP) ($15). https://crevecoeurlakerentals.net/pricing/
Divisions/Categories
In order to account for the different types of boats, talents, combos, and ages this event will feature the following divisions:
Solo kayak/canoe
Tandem kayak/canoe (includes 3 person)
Stand Up Paddle Board
Pack Raft
In addition, there will be three categories of competitors:
Juniors: Solo/All team members must be under 18 years old
Masters: Solo/All team members must be 55 years or over
Adult: Anything else (including combinations where one person is in another category)
Non-competitive: Any boat, any combination, no time limit, just be back by 12pm.
Safety
The standard SLOC waiver must be signed by every participant and for minors an adult must sign. EVERY PARTICIPANT MUST WEAR A COAST GUARD APPROVED TYPE III PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD). It is required TO BE WORN for the entire event, no matter what water craft you use, your skill level, or how hot it is, including when using a stand up paddle board. You MAY NOT just carry it or strap it to the water craft.
These are available through the rental company or provide your own. This rule will be enforced and if you break this rule while on the course you will eliminated from the results and may be barred from future SLOC events at the discretion of the SLOC Board. Those renting boats must sign all rental company agreements as directed.
The event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather and we will attempt to reschedule. We will use our website to announce this. Watch for updates if you see the weather is looking questionable that day.
Gear
The event will use e-punch. Anyone borrowing a SLOC e-punch will be responsible for it. If you lose the e-punch, you will owe a $30 replacement fee. We will have string and zip ties for extra security if you would like. It might be a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water as it will be hot.
Fees
The meet is free for SLOC members as part of your annual membership. The fee is $20 for those who are non-members and $10 for those under 18. The annual membership is still availible for only $50, that is 5 more meets before the year turns over, still the BEST DEAL in St. Louis outdoor sports!
