Thank you to everyone who braved the cold weather and came out to our annual John Smerek Memorial Scout O-Fest at Beaumont. We had a larger than expected turn out and everyone seemed to be having fun in the brisk beautiful woods of Beaumont. A special thanks to David Fisher and Nathan Graves who helped with directing and running the event. Coincidentally, David Fisher placed first in the Score-O division and Nathan Graves placed first overall on the Red Course. Congrats men! Let it be known that Nathan did not help set the course so had no prior knowledge of kite placement, however, I can’t speak the same for David :).

The results of the White, Green, and Red Courses are below. I also attached the Scout Score-O. We are already making plans to improve next year’s Scout Fest. Place March 11th, 2023 on your calendars!

Again, all controls were visited. This year, #53 was the most visited (25), and #12 was the least visited (2). By contrast, this year there were 503 control visits, Last year there were 683. What a difference one less hour and a little snow and ice can do!

Thanks to Yvonne for setting a wonderful Winter O in Babler State Park. It was a frosty start from the outdoor shelter. Luckily the hills helped warm us up!

2021-09-01 Summer Sprint Series #6 Creve Coeur Lake

Thanks to all who came out for another installment of the summer sprint series. While the 3.9km course is a bit longer than a sprint, the open fields, paths, and flat terrain proved enjoyable and fast!

The course was purposely littered with extra decoy controls. Participants did a great job reading the clue sheets accurately to find the correct controls in a short time.

The epunch system worked great. The user(that’s me) needed some work and updating. I’ve got it figured out now. Next meet will have printed splits and results immediately upon downloading. Thanks for everyone’s patience.

2021-08-25 Summer Sprint Series #5 Route 66

Thanks to everyone who helped me get the meet up and running. We had a hot evening but the drinks were cold and the camraderie was joyful. The course posed a challenge to all racers to figure out how to get the next bit of info to keep their plan flowing. I loved hearing all the different route choices and problem solving as racers came back in and shared their stories. We had 29 people come out and 26 of them on bikes which was wonderful and showed SLOC has interest in the bike O format!

Maybe I will test the waters with a canoe O next summer…?
